“Love is the condition for knowledge” has been a quote I’ve followed for quite some time. This past year I studied Christian apologetics and whenever we would talk about truth and being “truth-seekers”, we would discuss the fact that to seek truth is to love truth.
I have applied this to my worship by not just reading scripture intellectually but putting my passion and love of scripture into my study of scripture. This connects well to the next quote that was profound for me. “Jesus is a teacher who doesn’t just inform our intellect but forms our very loves.” Living with Christ as Lord over your life doesn’t just shape our values, thoughts, and theology, it changes our heart. Our hearts are transformed in the love of Christ. Our worship and walk with God aren’t just calm and intellectual, we can bring our passions and our difficult questions. This last quote was the one that bamboozled me the most. It reads, “In other words, your understanding of discipleship will reflect a set of working assumptions about the very nature of human beings, even if you’ve never asked yourself such questions.” This challenged my idea of worship some because I have never thought of discipleship as that. I have normally thought of discipleship only as living and striving to become more like Jesus by following Him. However, I haven’t ever truly thought that my understanding of discipleship reflects what I assume about the nature of human beings. After finishing this chapter, I found myself still sitting with this idea and just wrapping my head around it. I absolutely loved this chapter!
